Summer has a rhythm all its own.
School schedules pause, vacations begin, and daily routines often look a little different. While these seasonal shifts can bring excitement and new opportunities, they can also create challenges for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At Waves, we believe that progress doesn’t have to pause just because the season changes. In fact, summer can be a wonderful time to continue learning, exploring, and building connections.
Keeping Growth Going Through Summer
For young children, so much learning happens through everyday experiences. Waves’ Early Learning Program is built around the understanding that children learn best through play and within the routines and environments where they feel most comfortable.[1]
Summer offers countless opportunities for developmental growth. A trip to the park becomes a chance to practice communication skills. Water play encourages sensory exploration. Helping with simple household tasks or gardening activities can strengthen motor skills and foster independence. Even favorite summer traditions, from blowing bubbles to reading bedtime stories, become moments for learning.
At Waves, our Early Interventionists partner with families and caregivers to incorporate developmental strategies into everyday routines such as mealtimes, playtime, bath time, and bedtime.[1] Because parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers, these natural moments create powerful opportunities for continued progress.
Maintaining routines, even with a little flexibility, can provide children with a sense of security while allowing space for new experiences. Summer may look different, but growth can continue right alongside the sunshine and slower pace.
Building Community Through Adult Services
Summer brings its own energy to our Adult Services programs as well.
Throughout the year, Waves supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through day programming, residential services, employment support, and community integration opportunities.[2] These programs are designed to help individuals build independence while creating meaningful relationships and experiences.
Community engagement remains an important part of that mission. Whether participating in recreational activities, volunteering, attending classes, or enjoying outings with friends, the adults supported by Waves continue to learn, grow, and contribute to the community around them.[3]
These opportunities are about much more than staying busy. Shared experiences foster friendships, encourage confidence, and strengthen the sense of belonging that every person deserves.
Summer often invites us to slow down and enjoy life’s simple moments, and that spirit is alive throughout Waves programs. From laughter shared during activities to new experiences in the community, the season provides opportunities to create memories while continuing to work toward personal goals.
Embracing Flexibility
One of the beautiful things about summer is that it reminds us that routines don’t have to be rigid.
Change is a natural part of life, and flexibility can be a strength. At Waves, we know that every individual and every family has unique needs. Through personalized support and a commitment to meeting people where they are, we help ensure that progress continues throughout every season.[4]
Because growth isn’t measured only by milestones or goals achieved. Sometimes growth looks like trying something new, making a friend, gaining confidence, or simply finding joy in the everyday.
As summer unfolds, we hope you’ll embrace its rhythm, celebrate the small victories, and remember that support, connection, and opportunity never take a season off.
Here’s to sunshine, community, and making waves all summer long!
