“I can do it myself.”
It’s a phrase that parents often hear from toddlers, but it doesn’t disappear with childhood. The desire for independence stays with us throughout life. Whether it’s a child learning to zip their jacket, a young adult navigating public transportation for the first time, or someone proudly succeeding in a new job, independence is built one moment, one opportunity, and one achievement at a time.
At Waves, we believe independence isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about having the support, confidence, and opportunities to make choices, develop skills, and participate fully in everyday life. Confidence grows when people are trusted to try, encouraged through challenges, and celebrated for every victory, no matter how big or small.
Building Confidence in the Early Years

The foundation for independence begins long before kindergarten.
During the first five years of life, children experience rapid brain development, making everyday experiences incredibly important for learning and growth.[1] Through play, exploration, routines, and supportive relationships, children begin developing problem-solving skills, communication, self-help abilities, and confidence in their own capabilities.
At Waves’ Early Learning program, our therapists work alongside families in children’s natural environments, helping little ones practice meaningful skills where they live, play, and learn. A toddler reaching for a spoon independently. A preschooler learning to communicate their needs. A child taking those first confident steps onto the playground. These moments may seem small, but they become the building blocks for lifelong independence.
Rather than doing things for children, we strive to empower them to do more for themselves, always with encouragement and individualized support.
Independence Doesn’t End at Adulthood
Growing up doesn’t mean the journey toward independence is complete.
For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, independence looks different for every person, because every person’s goals are different. Sometimes it’s preparing lunch independently. Sometimes it’s mastering public transportation. Sometimes it’s building confidence at work, making new friends, or making decisions about daily life.
Research consistently shows that opportunities for meaningful community participation, employment, and self-determination improve quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.[2]
That’s why Waves focuses on helping each participant develop the skills that matter most to them. Through Adult Services, Employment Supports, Residential Services, and Community-Based Day Services, participants continue building confidence while discovering new ways to contribute, connect, and thrive.
Success isn’t measured by comparison to someone else. It’s measured by personal growth.
Confidence Grows Through Opportunity
One of the greatest gifts we can offer another person is the opportunity to try.
That may mean allowing extra time to complete a task, encouraging someone to make a decision, celebrating progress instead of perfection, or recognizing that every new skill begins with practice.
Confidence isn’t something people are born with. It’s something they build.
Every accomplishment creates momentum for the next one.
Every challenge overcome becomes evidence that, “I can do hard things.”
Every act of independence strengthens dignity, self-esteem, and belonging.
Celebrating Every Milestone
This July, as we celebrate Independence & Confidence, we’re reminded that independence looks different for everyone.
For one person, it may be saying their first word.
For another, it may be earning their first paycheck.
For someone else, it may simply be having the confidence to make a choice that’s entirely their own.
At Waves, these milestones are celebrated every single day because each one represents possibility, growth, and a future filled with even greater opportunities.
Together, we’re building communities where people of all abilities have the support to grow, the confidence to explore, and the freedom to live meaningful lives.
