At Waves, Inc., we believe that wellness is not a luxury—it’s a right. Whether you’re a toddler just learning how to navigate the world or an adult with a unique set of goals and challenges, everyone deserves the opportunity to live a life that feels full, grounded, and balanced.
As summer begins and routines shift, June is the perfect time to reflect on wellness—not just physical, but also emotional and mental health. Through our Early Learning and Adult Services programs, we’re committed to nurturing the whole person. Here’s how we help foster wellness and balance at every age and ability.
Wellness & Balance in Early Childhood
For the young children we support through our Early Learning Program, balance begins with the basics: routines, rest, and play. These foundational elements help children feel safe, confident, and ready to explore the world.
Predictable routines give children a sense of structure that promotes emotional security [1]. We work closely with caregivers to create consistent schedules that support both development and well-being. Adequate rest is just as vital—young children need sleep to support brain growth, memory, and emotional regulation [2].
And then, there’s play. Unstructured play is not just fun—it’s essential to helping children process their emotions, build resilience, and learn how to problem-solve [3]. Our early interventionists often coach families on how to balance screen time with sensory play, movement, and imaginative experiences that foster well-rounded development.
Here are a few simple tips we encourage families to try at home:
- Establish a bedtime and stick to it—even on weekends.
- Create a calm-down corner with soft items and visuals to help children manage big feelings.
- Incorporate outdoor time every day, even if it’s just a walk around the block.
We also regularly post tips like these on our Instagram page @waves_serves to support caregivers year-round.
Holistic Health in Adulthood
For the adults we support through our Day, Residential, Employment, and Community programs, balance looks different—but it’s just as important. At Waves, we take a whole-person approach to wellness. This means promoting independence, encouraging community connections, and supporting physical and emotional health.
Movement is part of our weekly rhythm—whether it’s through walking clubs, fitness classes, or simply getting outside. Research shows that regular physical activity can improve not only physical health but also mood and mental focus [4].
But wellness doesn’t stop with exercise. We build in time for mindfulness, creativity, and rest. Individuals may participate in art, music, or reading activities designed to help express themselves and reduce stress. Our direct support staff also model and encourage self-care practices, knowing that what we do each day helps shape a culture of compassion and calm.
Here are some wellness strategies we incorporate or encourage:
- Drink water throughout the day—hydration supports energy and focus.
- Use visuals and social stories to teach relaxation techniques like deep breathing.
- Celebrate progress over perfection—because self-care looks different for everyone.
Why Wellness Matters at Waves
Everything we do at Waves is rooted in empowerment. When we talk about helping individuals “reach their full potential,” we’re not just talking about milestones or goals—we’re talking about wholeness. We’re talking about lives filled with joy, connection, and yes, balance.
Whether it’s a child learning to name their emotions or an adult discovering the confidence to take a fitness class, we see wellness as an ongoing journey. One we’re proud to walk alongside, every day.
