The history of Waves

Early in 1973 a group of citizens in Fairview, Tennessee met to discuss the needs of individuals in their community with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. They determined the kinds of programs and services that would be needed. And, as one of the group put it, decided to “make waves” on behalf of these individuals. Thus, Waves, Inc. began.

Organization of the Agency progressed and financial support was sought. The July 28, 1973 Minutes report read: “Waves, Inc. has very good news regarding financing from the county.” However, stipulations were made by Williamson County that the agency was to serve the entire county not just the Fairview area.

The diligent group had not expected this, but determination prevailed and they accepted the challenge. Opportunities were to be extended to all children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities in Williamson County.

In September 1973, the Charter was received from the State. A director, two direct teaching staff and a social worker (who doubled as a van driver) were the first Waves employees. A half dozen consumers attended the first day of operation.

Today, there are over 135 full and part-time employees of Waves. A broad range of services and supports are provided to over one hundred consumers. Programs include:

  • Adult Day Programs in Fairview and Franklin that serve more than 50 individuals every weekday.
  • The Residential/Independent Living Program, that operates 10 homes and 7 apartments in Fairview and Franklin and currently provides around-the-clock support and services for twenty-seven individuals.
  • The Vocational/Employment Services Program which includes vocational training, job placement and job follow-along and support.
  • Waves Recycling Program which employs two individuals full-time, and provides recycling pick-up for more than 30 businesses in Franklin, Cool Springs and Brentwood.
  • The Early Childhood Learning Program which provides play-based early learning, developmental assessment and treatment protocols for infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children.

Over the years, Waves has touched the lives of innumerable individuals, children and families throughout Williamson County.
