After 26 years of the Waves Office Recycling Program, we are sad to share that the program will no longer continue. After much debate, the administrative team has decided that it is in the best interest of the organization to discontinue this service. We will be forever grateful for those businesses who partnered with us over the years. Below you can read a letter from our Executive Director to our previous customers.
Please allow this communication to provide an update and an appreciation. As you are aware, the combination of the pandemic alongside the elimination of support funding from the State of Tennessee has negatively affected the viability of our Office Recycling Program. This program was created over twenty years ago with the purpose of creating jobs for people with disabilities who might otherwise have difficulty maintaining employment in the community. The State of Tennessee unveiled new policies this year that eliminated the funding for any person with a disability being considered an employee of the same nonprofit agency providing supports, resulting in a budgetary loss in excess of $40,000 to our office recycling program. As the community continues to slowly reopen from the initial shutdown in the Spring, some customers have chosen to either reduce or eliminate their services as the model of the typical work office has shifted to more people working from home than ever before. Taking both these factors into consideration, the current business model is simply no longer sustainable for this service to continue as is without presenting significant increases in our pickup fees to the customers who have stuck with us to compensate for the lost revenue previously referenced. Currently, we see no option other than to begin the process of wrapping up the Waves Office Recycling Program and moving forward with our goals of continuing to create opportunities for people with disabilities in our community.
Thank you for your patronage and support over the years, and please know that we miss seeing the guys here in at Waves as much as we know you miss their regularly scheduled visits. We are currently working on finding them compatible jobs in the community, and hopefully will continue to set them up to succeed. We will be reaching out to each business to schedule a pickup time for any bins we have placed in businesses at some point within the next two weeks. Again, thank you for your continued support of this specific program and of the agency overall. Waves will continue with other programs as it has for 48 years, and we invite you to follow our journey through our various social media platforms.
